This smock is a checkered shirt, similar to the dashiki worn by men in Ghana. It also comes in feminine versions. The smock is also known as Bun-nw or Bana by Mamprusis, fugu or a batakari in the northern area, dansika in Frafra, or fugu or Banaa in Kusaal, all in the upper east. It has gained popularity in the three northern regions, where it is worn by the kings. The smock, which is comparable to the faso dan fadi, the national clothing of Burkina Faso, is a product of Ghana's three northern districts.
Smocks and Kente cloths make up Ghana's traditional clothing. Both smocks and Kente cloth have their origins in Ghana's northern and southern regions, respectively.
