This smock, a plaid shirt, is comparable to the dashiki that men in Ghana wear. The feminine versions are also offered. Alternatively, the smock may be called to as Bun-nw or Bana by Mamprusis, fugu or a batakari in the northern region, dansika in Frafra, or fugu or Banaa in Kusaal, both in the upper east. It has become more well-liked in the three northern areas where the kings wear it. The smock is a traditional garment of Ghana's three northern regions and is akin to the faso dan fadi, the country's traditional attire.

A smock and a Kente cloth are the two main components of Ghanaian national dress. Ghana's northern and southern areas, respectively, are where smocks and Kente fabric first appeared.
