Similar to the dashiki, which men in Ghana wear, this Ghanaian smock is a plaid shirt. It also comes in female variations. In addition to these names, the smock is also known as Bun-nw or Bana by Mamprusis, fugu or a batakari in the northern region, dansika in Frafra, and fugu or Banaa in Kusaal, both in the upper east. In Ghana, it is increasingly commonplace despite once only being worn by monarchs in the three northern provinces. The smock, which has its roots in Ghana's three northern regions, is similar to the faso dan fadi, the country's traditional clothing.

Ghana's traditional clothing consists of a smock and Kente fabric. Smocks and Kente cloth were made in Ghana's northern and southern halves, respectively.
